TechCrunch's coverage of Apple's Hide My Email changes may explain part of that jump. TechCrunch reported several privacy changes involving Apple's disposable aliases in 2026. No source proves one announcement caused the full spike.
Outbound teams have another reason to ask.
They're rebuilding email infrastructure around AI BDR agents.
That makes sense. But aliases aren't the deliverability fix some tools claim.
An alias changes the visible identity. It doesn't create a new mailbox, reputation, or security boundary.
Step 1: Choose Aliases, Mailboxes, or Subdomains
Start with the business risk. Don't start in Google Admin.
Aliases, mailboxes, and subdomains solve different problems.

Suppose `matt@storypros.io` has the alias `partnerships@storypros.io`.
Both addresses still feed the same mailbox. The alias usually uses Matt's credentials, limits, and provider connection.
That helps with routing. It doesn't limit the damage from a bad campaign.
A mailbox such as `jane@outbound.storypros.io` has its own login and sending history. You can pause it without shutting down Matt's email.
A subdomain such as `outbound.storypros.io` creates a separate authentication layer. It can use its own SPF, DKIM, DMARC, tracking, and provider setup.
Subdomains don't block every problem.

Problems can still affect related domains. Recipients can still see your root brand.

Step 2: Set Up the Alias Without Confusing It for a Mailbox
An email address identifies a destination. An alias sends another address to that destination.
That matters when an AI BDR sends replies.
In Google Workspace, an admin can add an alternate email to a user. The user may also need to set up Gmail's "Send mail as" option.
In Microsoft 365, an admin can add an alias to a mailbox. Sending from that alias may require the organization's alias-sending setting.
Check both directions:
1. Send a message to the alias. 2. Confirm it reaches the correct mailbox. 3. Reply from the alias. 4. Check the visible `From` address. 5. Check the full headers. 6. Confirm the reply doesn't expose the primary address.
That last check matters.
Apple said it fixed the issue in March 2026. Murphy found it was still exploitable.
Apple is a different provider. The lesson still applies.
An alias stays private only if every layer handles it that way.
Don't create fake credentials for an alias. It has none.
The parent mailbox handles authentication. Your sending agent should authenticate through that mailbox or an approved mail service.
Never share one mailbox password across ten agent processes. Use OAuth and revocable, restricted connections.

Step 3: Align SPF, DKIM, and DMARC Before Sending
SMTP was built in the early 1980s.
It came from a smaller internet built on trust. Sender identity was closer to a pinky promise than a security system.
SPF, DKIM, and DMARC each handle a different part of the problem.
- SPF lists approved sending systems.
- DKIM signs messages with a domain-controlled key.
- DMARC checks whether SPF or DKIM matches the visible `From` domain.
DMARC passes when aligned SPF or aligned DKIM passes.
An alias doesn't change this rule. The part before `@` has little effect here.
The domain matters.
Follow this order:
1. List every system that sends for the domain. 2. Remove old tools and abandoned providers. 3. Publish one SPF record per domain. 4. Add the provider's approved SPF include. 5. Enable DKIM in Google, Microsoft, or your mail service. 6. Publish the DKIM record in DNS. 7. Confirm the DKIM `d=` domain matches the `From` domain. 8. Publish DMARC at `_dmarc.yourdomain.com`. 9. Start with reporting enabled. 10. Move toward quarantine or reject after you review legitimate traffic.
A basic monitoring record may look like this:

Don't copy an SPF record from a random blog. Google, Microsoft, Mailgun, and SendGrid provide their own values.
Don't publish two SPF records. That causes a permanent error.

MX records control inbound routing. A sales tool shouldn't replace your company's inbound mail setup.

Step 4: Limit the Blast Radius Before the Agent Sends
Most outbound failures come from weak controls around the model.
An AI BDR can send all day. That's useful, and it's risky.
Google's public sender guidance says spam complaints should stay below 0.3%. Newer Postmaster documentation flags rates above 0.1% in some reports.
A 0.3% complaint rate equals three complaints per 1,000 messages.
A polite email can still be unwanted. Authentication won't fix that.
Mailgun made this point while reviewing Gmail's political sender program. Verification proves identity. It doesn't prove recipients want the message.
Build hard limits around every mailbox:
- Set a daily send ceiling.
- Cap hourly volume.
- Raise volume slowly.
- Stop campaigns after bounce rates rise.
- Pause senders after complaint warnings.
- Block duplicate contacts before writing the email.
- Check suppression lists before every send.
- Honor opt-outs across all aliases and mailboxes.
- Require one-click unsubscribe when Gmail requires it.
- Keep cold outbound separate from invoices and password resets.
Don't use your primary domain for aggressive prospecting.
Use a dedicated subdomain with real mailboxes. Keep your website and employee email on the root domain.
Don't create 100 aliases on one mailbox and call it isolation.

Step 5: Log Every Send and Every Decision
If you can't reconstruct a send, your agent isn't governed.
Store more than the email body.
Your log should capture:

- Prompt version
- Generated subject and body
- Data sources used
- Send timestamp
- Provider response
- Bounce type
- Complaint event
- Unsubscribe event
- Retry count
- Approval status
The alias alone isn't enough. You also need the parent mailbox and sending domain.
This is where many AI BDR tools fall short.
They show "sent" in a dashboard. They don't keep the full path from source data to provider response.

- Full event logging in n8n and a database
- Automatic pause rules for bad signals
- Google Postmaster monitoring where volume qualifies
